In case you haven’t seen our post from Juneau the morning of June 17th, Jill and I are now engaged. We’ll be getting married in Southport, NC in July.
We have decided not to make the wedding website open to the general public.
Please log in to Martinak.net to see the wedding website link. You may have to register with Martinak.Net if you have not already done so.
Well, We’ve posted all the pics & videos from Alaska that Jill & I could go through in a week. I have more, but We’ll save those for another day. I hope you enjoyed the trip!

We’re home! We got right off the cruise ship, took a taxi to the Amtrak station, had a quick lunch, and headed for Vancouver. We got to visit with one of Dave’s best friends, Laith, as well as Laith’s parents, who are super nice. We actually stayed in the building adjacent to Laith’s condo, in a furnished apartment, which was pretty small, but a really good deal. We stayed in Vancouver for a few days, just hanging out, walking around town, eating great food, strolling through the parks, and taking in the sights down at the harbor.

Awesome! I never pictured myself sea kayaking, but it was really fun, and we did a great job out there! Dave and I were in a tandem kayak, so I was little nervous that we’d flip the thing trying to balance, but we were fine. Once we coordinated our paddling and worked together, we were cruising. We kayaked across the waterway to a beach-like area. Everyone gathered sticks and our guides built a campfire on the beach. We had some time to rest, hydrate, and we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows over the campfire. It was really fun, and we needed the break, but while we were there, the tide went down quite a bit and the weather was quickly getting cooler.

Today our ship docked in the town of Skagway, Alaska. We were already worn out before we left the ship. Yesterday was such a long day. Don’t get me wrong… it was incredibly wonderful, but it wore us out! Ok, well, now that I think about it… we also went out to celebrate our engagement last night and the White Star champagne we drank might have effect our energy level this morning.

But wait… this perfect day was not yet over. We had another excursion planned and had to meet our group. Before the cruise ship left port, we boarded a pontoon boat with our tour group and headed for Tracy Arm Fjord to see the Sawyer Glacier. The boat ride itself was fun. You could sit inside and gaze out the window at the beautiful water and mountains, or you could bundle up and step outside for an even better view. We learned a lot about the area, the wildlife, and the glaciers from one of our tour guides who called herself a “naturalist.” We had wonderful views of several humpback whales and killer whales, as well as bald eagles and seals. I was on the lookout for a white mountain goat, but I never did actually see one of those.

Today is incredible and a day that will live in my mind and heart forever.
After a short van ride from the dock area, we took a helicopter ride from the Juneau airport over many of the glaciers in the area. It was like nothing I have ever seen or could ever have even possibly imagined in my mind. I thought the Misty Fjords was beautiful, but today was just literally breathtaking.

We just got back aboard the ship after a day in Ketchikan. Where do I begin? Well, since I left off yesterday, we’ve experienced a beer tasting, dress up night, a fabulous and romantic dinner at Cagney’s, Monte Carlo night at the casino, a breathtaking float plane trip to Misty Fjords National Monument…. and an awesome lunch from the Burger Queen over at the Arctic Bar, before heading back to dock.

| We are aboard the Norwegian Star and heading toward Ketchikan, Alaska. We got really lucky getting on the ship yesterday. We were in the first group aboard, which was just luck, really. We were supposed to be in the 28th group, but our check-in hostess swapped our number 28 for the number 2, just as they said groups 1 – 3 could board the ship. We walked right on, were each given a mimosa and a welcome aboard. |
